When I was young, my grandmother met John, fell in love, and they got married. He was a man of many talents. He was incredibly entertaining as a voice on the radio, but surely he was a newspaper man by trade. He was a writer and later in his life he was an editor. But all the while, he was a talented photographer. From his days serving as a military photographer that documented American history in Korea and Vietnam, through owning and operating his own newspaper and taking countless photos of his friends and family, or making art in his image, he was always near a camera. It is through John that I first learned about photography. He even hired me to take photos for his newspaper when I was in high school. Over the 20+ years that he was my grandfather he inspired me in many ways, but photography was one of the first.
On this page, I wanted to share some of my favorite photographs that John took over the years. I hope you enjoy.
